What is sage hydrosol?

Sage hydrosol is obtained through steam distillation of Salvia officinalis leaves and flowering tops, the same process that yields the essential oil. Among its constituents, rosmarinic acid stands out as a polyphenol with antioxidant capacity, alongside trace essential oil compounds that give it a characteristic olfactory profile. These properties make it a valued calming and astringent ingredient for formulations targeting oily or blemish-prone skin.

Main cosmetic uses of sage hydrosol

Aqueous base in emulsions. Many formulators use it as a partial or full water-phase substitute in creams and lotions, replacing deionized water to add sensory and functional value to the finished product.

Ingredient in hair care. It is used in shampoos and hair waters formulated for oily scalp, taking advantage of its regulating action and characteristic herbaceous scent.

Cold-process soap formulations. In cold-process saponification, some soap makers replace part of the lye water with sage hydrosol to add olfactory nuances and residual actives to the finished bar.
