Lampante olive oil: what it is, uses and bulk price

Lampante olive oil is the commercial category of virgin olive oil that, due to its free acidity or to sensory defects, is not suitable for direct human consumption under European Union rules. It is still an olive oil, but its natural path through the value chain is either refining for food use or, in its organic version, supply to the cosmetic, artisan soap and cold-process saponification industries. This guide explains what lampante olive oil actually is, how it differs from virgin and extra virgin grades, what the main professional uses are, what drives its bulk price, and how Royal Bio supplies organic lampante olive oil to European laboratories, soap makers and natural cosmetic brands.

What is lampante olive oil?

Lampante olive oil is a virgin olive oil whose free acidity, expressed as oleic acid, exceeds 2 degrees, or that presents sensory defects which exclude it from direct sale to the consumer under Regulation (EEC) 2568/91 and its subsequent amendments. The word "lampante" comes from the Italian for "lamp oil", because historically this category was burned in oil lamps before kerosene and electricity became widespread.

Unlike extra virgin olive oil, which is produced by mechanical means alone and meets the most demanding quality parameters, lampante is the lowest category within virgin olive oils. It is not a by-product or a lower-quality origin: it simply does not reach the sensory purity required for direct sale as edible oil.

The organic version of lampante olive oil comes from olives cultivated under European organic certification, without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers. That nuance is critical for certified natural cosmetic and soap formulations, where the organic origin of the raw material is a requirement of the finished product specification.

Differences between lampante, virgin, extra virgin and refined olive oil

It is useful to clarify the four most common commercial categories of olive oil, because they are often confused:

Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO): free acidity at most 0.8 degrees, no perceptible sensory defects. This is the premium category for raw consumption.

Virgin olive oil: free acidity up to 2 degrees, with only minor sensory defects. Suitable for direct consumption.

Lampante olive oil: free acidity above 2 degrees or perceptible sensory defects. Not suitable for direct human consumption. Channelled to refining or to non-food uses.

Refined olive oil: lampante that has gone through a physical or chemical refining process which neutralises acidity and sensory defects. It is usually blended afterwards with virgin or extra virgin oil to produce the everyday "olive oil" sold for home cooking.

The organic lampante olive oil that Royal Bio supplies is not refined for the food market: it is delivered as a cosmetic and soap-making raw material, keeping its fatty acid profile intact.

Origin and organic certification

Because lampante olive oil shares the same compositional family as any other olive oil, what really differentiates a cosmetic-grade organic lampante is its traceable origin. The olives come from certified organic groves, primarily Mediterranean, and are processed under standards that exclude synthetic pesticides and fertilisers.

This matters in particular to manufacturers working under natural and organic cosmetic standards (such as Cosmos or similar private schemes), and to artisan soap makers who need to evidence the organic origin of their key ingredients to retailers, marketplaces and end customers.

Royal Bio provides batch documentation including the organic certification of the lot, which can be added to the buyer's technical dossier or product information file.
