Roman chamomile essential oil is obtained through steam distillation of the flowers of Chamaemelum nobile, a herbaceous plant grown across several European regions. The distillation process concentrates the flower's volatile compounds, producing an oil ranging from pale blue to yellowish in colour, with a soft, herbaceous, slightly fruity scent.

Its composition is characterised by compounds such as bisabolol, bisabolol oxide and farnesene, which provide soothing and anti-inflammatory properties of particular interest for sensitive-skin formulations.
